As spring approaches in the desert and temperatures start to rise this herd of wild horses in Arizona began migrating to their summer grounds. In the coming days as many as 300 wild horses will congregate near the Salt River. Eventually the alpha stallion (in this picture the horse to the far left) of each small herd will give the signal and they will all swim across the river together. If there are young colts in the group the adult horses will form a circle around the young horse as they swim to protect it from being swept downstream by the swift current. Once on the other side they will rest and graze a few weeks before moving on. Such a beautiful ritual of nature!!
