Here’s one of my favorite recent photo paintings. I took this photo during a month-long trip to Tonto National Forest (outside of Phoenix, Arizona) to photograph wild horses that roam the desert and surrounding mountains. There were a number of different herds, each protected by an alpha stallion. On this particular day near sunset a white stallion appeared at the top of a ridge with the sun setting behind him and his herd hidden on the other side. A few days earlier a young mare from another herd had been killed by a mountain lion and he was not going to let it happen to one of his own! He looked almost ghostly against the hazy background of the golden sky. And then it struck me. This scene has played out over generations and generations. No longer was I looking at just a stallion, I was looking at the spirit of a species.
